Jesus continues the prayer” …and forgive us our debts, as
we forgive our debtors…” [Mt.6:12].
Maybe Jesus was talking about credit cards. I
don’t know, but he certainly meant some kind of common living we encounter any
day. So, it can have to do with forgive us for hurting someone else. Forgive
them for hurting us---not their behavior. God will judge that. The verse
becomes a reminder that we still trespass, sin, but forgiveness is the answer
provided.
There is a life attitude here--- a reminder that
living is a gift from God that includes a system of giving and receiving, like
Col. 3:13 tells us.
Of course, Jesus did not literally sin himself,
but on the Cross, he felt the loneliness, the pain from others, the
selfishness, the willfulness of all human sin, our sin. He can say, “I feel this
with you.”
We are to grow in patience so we can forgive the
seeming unforgiveable for their misguided natures, maybe even accept
forgiveness for the hard secret areas of parts of ourselves.
Give forgiveness like a gift because we receive
forgiveness.
